Club Etiquette in 2019

Hey guys! So I don’t know about y’all, but I barely go out and when I do it’s either with family members or friends.

here I am with my cousin this past weekend while watching the soccer game against brazil.
This was when I went to meet up with some friends in Toronto!

If you’ve been reading my posts, you’ll know that I’m always up for an adventure (see here and here).

But what I want to talk to y’all about is Club etiquette in 2019, because apparently I have none lol. My aim with this post is to inform all of y’all out there about the unspoken rules–if you will– there are when going out.

Club etiquette is so different from other kinds of etiquette. I feel like all of you really need to understand certain communication cues when it comes to being in a club or a bar or both!

Being a communication major has allowed me to look at not just the out-right communication cues, but also the nonverbal cues of each individual and how that, in turn, affects communication. If I’m being honest, this kind of stuff really interests me.

Regardless of that fact, I know that I have a lot to learn when it comes to interacting with people in such a setting, among many other things.

So in today’s blog post, I’ll be talking about club etiquette, more specifically statements that I’ve heard (and learned throughout), as well as what to look out for. Let’s get started!

Statement #1: “If he/she offers to buy you a drink, say yes!”

So this is something I learned recently. I thought that if someone asked me if I wanted a drink, I thought that meant that I’d be taking a risk, but boy was I wrong! Apparently, If they offer to buy you a drink, say yes.

In the event that someone comes by with a drink and they tell you that they got you it, without even asking you, then you say no, because you don’t know what they put in it or anything. You can never be too trusting of the people around you in nightlife.

Statement #2: “Always use the buddy system”

When you’re out and about with friends, three is the magic number. Make sure that you either let 3 people know where you are at all times or make sure that you have at least one other person with you.

Always have a buddy who is willing to make sure that you are okay. If you have to go to the bathroom or anything, make sure that your buddy is okay. If you have to– and you should–wait with them while they wait for their uber/ride back home.

Never, ever, ever let your buddy be alone, because it is there that they become vulnerable to predators.

Statement #3: “Always let at least 3 people know where you are”

This was something that someone had said to me the one time I went out without letting anyone know–sorry, mom.

I was in my first year of college and being all hyped up on antidepressants, I pulled an irrational move. Which was to go out, literally out of nowhere and not let anyone-not even my suite mates- know where I was going that night, who I was meeting with, etc.

It was bad and it was something I really don’t intend on doing again. Just tell whoever, where you’ll be at all times. You’ll thank me later!

Things to look out for…

Make sure to pace yourself.

It’s always nice to go out and have a couple of drinks with your friends, meet people and dance a bit, but if you have a big thing the next day or work or you have to drive home, please don’t go all out.

Pacing yourself involves making sure you don’t get drunk. It’s making sure that as each hour goes on you’re doing all you can to stay sober, that involves: making sure you’re drinking water or by sweating out the alcohol, by any means necessary.

I do not want any of you to go out, get shitfaced and later drive. You are not only putting yourself in danger, but you’re putting others in danger. Keep that in mind.

When getting an Uber, Make sure you ask the driver what your name is

Check the license plate, the make, model of the car. If all of those criteria line up with whats shown on your Uber app and the person has said your name, then it is safe to get into the car.

I want you to stay safe, because not too long ago, a girl, named Samantha Josephson went out on a night out with friends, she went into a car that she thought was an uber and was killed shortly thereafter. So please, in honor of Samantha, ask the driver what your name is.

Her family has started a foundation in her honor, so for more information on the foundation and how you can help, click here.

If you see suspicious people at the club, say something

Look, I don’t care if you have to jump up on a table to let everyone know there’s someone who gives you the heebie-jeebies, LET A PERSON KNOW.

Because I want you to stay safe. So stick by your friends and don’t be afraid to let them know that you’re not comfortable in the bar or club, you’re at.

And with that I conclude my PSA, for all y’all! I really hope that I have helped you really think about what to do when going out, as well as what to look out for. At the end of the day, I just want you all to be safe and take these precautions into consideration!
