Dealing with Stress

What is up, friends?! I hope all of you are having a wonderful day! As Suicide Prevention week comes to a close, I thought it’d be nice to conclude with a post on dealing with stress. This past week was the first full week of classes and work.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love school and I like working. I just feel like it’s a lot to handle and I have been feeling really overwhelmed.

A lot of times in our lives we start to feel stressed and overwhelmed, almost feeling like we’re barely above water.

It’s a scary feeling and it’s even scarier if we feel alone in this.

It’s one of the biggest misconceptions that we believe. As young adults, we’re taught that by the time we are old enough or qualified enough for a job, we need to have our shit together. We should be able to do a, b, and c.

Little do we know, that the people around us have so many more stresses than you could ever imagine.

Stress is one of the many causes of a variety of illnesses. They say that prolonged stress is the main cause of depression and I’d be lying if I told you that I haven’t felt stressed prior to my depression.

I thought I could handle taking 5 courses, holding a leadership position at school and working 4 days a week, but… I can’t… So I’m going to talk about what you can do to deal with stress . So Let’s get started!

Make sure you are doing some sort of physical activity

No running your mouth doesn’t count, and neither does running to your next class. I mean like actual physical activity, outside of class, outside of work.

Doing physical activity has been proven to be really good for your mental health and it a great stress reliever. When you work out, you put more focus on the exercises and on how you feel, not on whatever it is that is stressing you out.

So get those endorphins flowing!

Make sure that you talk to someone

As I’ve said before, the biggest lie we tell ourselves, is that we’re the only ones who feel stressed out. It may seem that way, but I guarantee you that if you talked to the person right next to you in class or at work, you’ll see that they, too have their own stresses going on.

For example, I was at school this week and I was so overwhelmed with how much work I had to do and felt like I had no time in the day to complete it all. I told my friend this and they told me that they were also stressed!

With internships, jobs, school, and other responsibilities, we have a lot on our plates now as college students!

Get comfortable with speaking up and talking with others about what you need. And don’t feel bad about your decision! Watching out for your mental health is worth it!

At work, I managed to tell my supervisors/managers that I seriously have to cut back on my hours, because at the rate that I’m going with that and 5 classes, I know it’s going to burn me out. And that’s the last thing I want.

Schedule some Treat Yo’ Self days

Has anyone seen Parks and Rec? Well, for those who haven’t seen the show, there are these two characters who are played by Retta and Aziz Ansari, and they are the funniest duo who will go out on a set day and TREAT THEMSELVES!

See for yourself!

Make sure not to go overboard with this one though, because you will end up broke haha. But look for ways to treat yourself, that includes: watching a movie on Netflix, spending some time with family or friends, spending some time by yourself doing some journaling or some much needed self-care, the list could go on!

The bottom line is you need to set out some time for yourself so that you can come back to a refreshed, more focused you.

I care about y’all and I don’t ever want any of you to go through what I went through. Prior to my depression, I was stressed beyond belief, I believed that no one had it as bad as me. I felt so alone in the world and it really messed me up for some time. But now, I’m here to tell you that it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. Make sure that you are actively looking for the solutions in your everyday life.

Life comes with so many twists and turns, that often, we may need to seek help, AND THERE IS NO SHAME IN THAT!
