I Come From…

Hey, y’all so I wanted to do something different for today’s blog post!

Before I begin, I want to take this moment to really set the scene and really tell you guys why and how this idea came to mind.

When I was a freshman in high school, I had this English teacher who really wanted to get our creative juices flowing by creating a poem of where we were from, talk about our childhoods in a way, along with drawing pictures along the margins… I practically forgot about that assignment, until the memory of that assignment came back to me, more recently on a night when I was away in Colombia.

While I was on vacation, I was sitting on the balcony of a close family friends’ apartment and I was looking out into the streets of Cartagena, Colombia. It was a humid, yet breezy night and we were just talking, catching up on life, having a couple of beers, and listening to Vallenato (accordion music), ya know, the ushe.

It was an awesome night and that breeze with was the most relaxing combination of a summer night in Colombia. And after a moment of taking it all in, it hit me. This is where I come from. So here’s my poem!

I come from the loud bustling noise of my family
The highest of the highs and the lowest of the lows
I’m from the aroma of the salt-water and gasoline
The beach and endless road-trips around the countryside
I’m from fresh ground coffee, the beauty that is my culture
From bollos and arepas con huevo
From the Streets of Cartagena
I’m from the American way of life
The hurry-up, but wait
From ponte las pilas and echa pa’ lante
I’m from breezy summer nights to humid summer mornings
From laughing out loud to failing to stay quiet
From enjoying life just as it is and loving it for all it is
From friends leaving and family always staying
To compassionate, loving advice and honest realizations
From depression to triumph
from uncertainty to absolute direction
this is where I come from and I am proud

I hope you all enjoyed this poem and I also hope that this inspired you to think about your roots. We all have a story to tell, after all.

Sending a load love and light your way,
